Description

Onion Boil made with a large sweet onion, vegan butter, extra virgin olive oil, cajun seasoning, salt, and optional seasonings and parsley.

Ingredients

1 large (15 ounce) sweet onion, peeled and ends trimmed off

1 tablespoon vegan butter

1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil

1 teaspoon cajun seasoning

1/4 teaspoon salt (plus more to taste when serving each layer)

optional additional seasonings: 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder, 1/4 teaspoon old bay seasoning

optional garnish: finely diced parsley leaves

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

2. Season the onion. Use a small melon baller to scoop out the top center portion of the onion (about 1/3 of the way down) to make a well in the center. Place the onion on a sheet of aluminum foil and add the butter into the well. Mix the seasonings with the olive oil and pour over the butter into the well, allowing the oil and seasoning mixture to drip down the sides of the onion. Season with salt and any additional seasonings desired.

3. Wrap the onion in aluminum foil. Seal the entire onion tightly in the aluminum foil and place it in a small baking dish or cast iron skillet to catch any oil that seeps out of the foil.

4. Roast on the center rack of the oven for 1 hour. Remove from the oven and open the foil to check on the onion. The entire onion should be fork tender and the center should jiggle. It also should be slightly caramelized. If it needs more time to cook, simply reseal the foil and pop it back in the oven for another 10 minutes and recheck after that.

5. Caramelize it futher by broiling (optional). Turn the oven to broil. Open the foil and drizzle more melted butter (or olive oil) and an extra pinch of salt. Broil for 5-10 minutes, watching closely to avoid burning. This will give the onion a golden brown caramelized exterior on top.

6. Serve. Peel away the outer layer and then enjoy each layer beneath that with an extra sprinkle of salt if desired. Be sure to pour all the juices from the foil overtop the onion when serving to maximize flavor. I love to serve this with rice, crispy chickpeas and other roasted veggies like these crispy Brussels sprouts. Enjoy while hot.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator once it has fully cooled to room temperature.

A Little Backstory From My Busy Week

3

This recipe came into my life on one of those evenings when dinner plans felt heavier than they should. The fridge wasn’t empty, but nothing obvious was calling my name. I remembered scrolling past an Onion Boil video earlier that day and thinking it looked almost too simple. With a few onions on the counter and very little energy left, I decided to give it a try. By the time it came out of the oven, the kitchen smelled warm and savory, and dinner suddenly felt manageable again.

What Makes This Dinner a Weeknight Winner

What makes Onion Boil (Viral TikTok Recipe) such a reliable choice is how little it asks of you. There’s no chopping beyond trimming an onion, no complicated timing, and no long ingredient list to track. The onion softens slowly as it cooks, turning sweet and mellow while soaking up the seasonings around it. It works as a light main when paired with bread or a salad, or as a cozy side alongside roasted vegetables or grains. Most of all, it fits easily into a busy evening without feeling rushed.

The Flavor Boosters That Set This Version Apart

4

The real magic of this recipe is how the layers of flavor build with almost no effort. Wrapping the onion tightly allows it to steam and roast at the same time, which gives you a tender center and rich juices at the bottom. A pat of butter melts down into the onion layers, carrying seasoning into every bite. Garlic powder, paprika, and salt do the heavy lifting, while a splash of broth keeps everything moist and savory. As it cooks, the onion releases its natural sweetness, balancing the salt and spices in a way that feels thoughtful rather than plain. Finishing with a sprinkle of fresh herbs or cracked pepper adds a little contrast right before serving.

Your Smooth Cooking Timeline

Once the oven is preheated, everything moves at a calm, steady pace. You prepare the onion, season it, and wrap it snugly, then let the heat do its job. While it cooks, there’s no need to hover or stir. The onion slowly softens, the butter melts, and the kitchen fills with a gentle aroma. When it’s done, unwrapping the foil feels like opening a small package of comfort, with steam rising and the onion practically falling apart on its own.

Quick Fixes for Common Cooking Slip-Ups

2 1

If your onion comes out firmer than expected, it likely just needs more time. Different onion sizes cook at different speeds, so an extra 10 to 15 minutes can make all the difference. If the bottom looks dry, add a splash more broth and rewrap it before returning it to the oven. For seasoning that tastes flat, a pinch of salt or a squeeze of lemon at the end can bring everything back into balance.

Make-Ahead & Storage Made Simple

3 1

This recipe is best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers hold up better than you might expect. Store any remaining onion in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave with a spoonful of broth to keep it moist. The flavor deepens slightly as it rests, making leftovers a cozy addition to lunch the next day.

Nutrition Snapshot

Onion Boil (Viral TikTok Recipe) is naturally light and built around whole ingredients. Onions provide fiber and natural sweetness without heaviness. Using a modest amount of butter keeps the dish satisfying without being overwhelming, and pairing it with vegetables or grains rounds out the meal nicely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of onion?
Yes, sweet onions, yellow onions, or even red onions all work. Sweet onions will be milder, while yellow onions bring a deeper savory note. Choose what you have on hand.

Is this recipe spicy?
No, it’s more savory than spicy. If you enjoy heat, you can add a pinch of chili flakes or cayenne to the seasoning mix before cooking.

Can I make this without foil?
Foil helps trap steam, which is key to the soft texture. If you prefer not to use foil, a small covered baking dish can work as an alternative.

What should I serve with onion boil?
It pairs well with crusty bread, rice, or roasted vegetables. It can also sit alongside a simple protein or salad for a balanced plate.
